Advanced Virtual Design of 3D Printed Fusion Reactor Components

This is to continue recent work that uses X-ray tomography, high performance computing and finite element analysis to design the plasma facing wall of the ITER reactor. Recent related publications can be found below:

Applications are sought for four Post-Doctoral Research Associates and two PhDs to join a very active research group at Cardiff University, UK (School of Engineering).  Based in Cardiff, there will be frequent interactions with the University of California, San Diego as well as major aerospace companies in the UK. The research will formulate and develop numerical methods for mulitiscale and multiphysics design optimisation using level set topology optimization.

PhD opportunities

A PhD research subject is proposed for students to apply at Arts et Métiers ParisTech.

Applications are invited for a fully funded PhD studentship at the University of Manchester to help develop the next generation of simulation tools. These will be used to evaluate the structural integrity of novel aerospace composites under a wide range of operational conditions.

I am currently recruiting new PhD students to join my research group at The School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering at the University of Manchester. The core focus of the group is advanced computing for engineering simulation. My research interests centre on extreme scale parallel computing, cloud computing and virtual reality simulation platforms, applied to scientific and engineering problems involving complex processes.

Non-destructive testing (NDT) refers to techniques that are used in the life-cycle of a structural component to investigate their quality, functionality and 'health' without destroying the object, nor affecting its properties. The continuous development of more advanced materials, like fiber reinforced plastics, requires new and more sophisticated NDT techniques. One such an innovative NDT technique is the Ultrasonic Polar Scan (UPS) which has recently been developed, both experimentally and numerically, in our research group.

The core idea of this fundamental research project is to develop a consistent multi-scale modelling framework for fatigue damage in unidirectionally reinforced composites. Three scales are distinguished: (i) the micro-scale, where individual fibre filaments are arranged in a polymer matrix.

One research direction is modeling of nano reinforced materials, with combined theoretical and experimental efforts. Highly Stretchable/Flexible composites combines the leight weight of classical composites and mechanical properties of a polymer based composites, and thus do have a very broad biological applications. .
