Two faculty positions in computational and experimental mechanics at Columbia University

Columbia University
Department of Civil Engineering and Engineering Mechanics

The Department of Civil Engineering and Engineering Mechanics invites applications for TWO tenure-track faculty positions to support a Department initiative in Sustainable Engineering. Qualified individuals are sought with expertise in either:

(1) Computational mechanics - with an emphasis on large-scale computing applied to multi-scale, multi-phase modeling of materials (from nano- to macro-scale), and/or mechanics and materials challenges in energy and/or the environment.

Positions: Post doctoral and doctoral

Ph.D and post-doctoral positions available immediately in Professor Zikry's rsearch group at North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC.

Currently, we have openings with researchers with backgrounds in computational solid mechanics, atomistic and molecular modeling, multiscale techniques, and fracture mechanics. We also have openings in experimental mechanics.

I can be contacted at zikry@ncsu.edu. Please forward latest cv.

Thanks

Journal Club Theme of May 2007: Experimental Mechanics of Nanobuilding Blocks

Welcome to the May 2007 issue. This issue focuses on experimental nanomechanics of nanobuilding blocks. The extremely small dimensions of nanobuilding blocks (for instance, nanoparticles, nanotubes, and nanowires) have imposed great challenges to many existing instruments, methodologies, and even theories.  In this issue, we will discuss – (1) experimental techniques and (2) size-effects.

materials of engineering laboratory

In the spring semester of 2002, Dr. Woldesenbet and I gave a hand-on laboratory course: Materials of Engineering Laboratory, to the junior undergraduate students at the Louisiana State University. In this Blog, I am also adding some state-of-the-art techniques for materials laboratory.

experimentally, stresses cannot be measured directly

Experimentally, loading to a mechanical system can be applied either through the displacement control or the force control.

However, the responses of the system can only be measured in displacements, and hence strains.

Associate or Assistant Professor -- Experimental Mechanics of Materials

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Wyoming invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position. Applicants are sought at the Associate or Assistant Professor level with expertise in experimental mechanics and particularly in emerging areas of science and technology. Such areas include but are not limited to the study of biomaterials, tissue engineering, nanomechanics of engineering materials, as well as thin films and multilayers, fracture, fatigue and damage.

The successful applicant will be expected to establish a strong, funded research program, as well as teach at the graduate and undergraduate levels. She/He will be expected to participate in interdisciplinary research efforts both within and outside the College of Engineering. Minimum qualifications include an earned doctorate in mechanical engineering, materials science/engineering, or a closely related field.
