Research Engineer - Opening at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School on Biomedical Device Development

Our lab is currently developing the next generation of biomedical devices for treatment of major diseases. This includes technologies such as drug delivery systems, smart pills and stents, soft actuators, and ingestible electronics for sensing and monitoring. These disruptive technologies will impact the lives of many, helping treat chronic illnesses, minimize side effects, and improve patient compliance for long and cumbersome treatment regimens. A wide variety of concepts from mechanical engineering, materials/polymer science, bioengineering, chemistry, biology, and physics are utilized to develop novel platform technologies. This position is largely related to designing, prototyping, and testing ingestible and implantable devices used for the delivery of therapeutic agents and sensors through the skin, gastrointestinal tract and other anatomical compartments. The work will be performed at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School and is part of larger collaborations with several external collaborators.

Qualifications

The candidate should hold a M.S./M.Eng./PhD degree in mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, or materials science. An ideal candidate will have research experience in biomedical engineering as well as hands-on experience/rapid prototyping skills, but training to gain further skills will be available. Candidates with relevant experience in any of the following areas are encouraged to apply:

·     CAD/CAM (SolidWorks, Fusion360)

·     Biomedical device design and development

·     Material characterization (biomaterials and plastics, experience with Instron testing machines a plus)

·     Additive manufacturing/3D Printing (FDM and SLA)

·     Subtractive manufacturing (manual and CNC machining)

·     Plastic molding (extrusion, injection molding, and compression molding)

·     Polymer science/polymer formulation

·     Drug delivery/pharmaceutical sciences

Candidate must have self-motivation and willingness to learn new tools and techniques; strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills; ability to work independently and as part of a team; comfort summarizing and reporting results to interdisciplinary researchers; commitment to exceeding standards and producing accurate, high quality work; meticulous attention to detail; practiced documentation skills; and ability to follow safety procedures and maintain a safe work environment.  Additionally, the candidate will work closely with the lab team and general infrastructure of the building to safely accommodate and monitor new and current equipment.

Collaborative Environment: The Traverso laboratories are research labs at BWH/Harvard Medical School and MIT focused on developing new technologies at the interface of biotechnology and materials science.

Interested candidates should send their CV, contact information for up to two references, academic transcript, and a one-page cover letter to cgt20@mit.edu and sbabaee@mit.edu. This a two-year appointment with the possibility for annual renewal. There is flexibility on the start date, although May-August 2022 start is preferred.

Application deadline: 3/31/22
