Faculty Openings – Two Tenure-Track Positions, Mechanical Engineering, Northwestern University

The Mechanical Engineering Department at Northwestern University invites applications to fill two tenure-track faculty positions at the Assistant or Associate Professor level. Outstanding candidates may be considered at the Full Professor level. We seek candidates that have a solid technical foundation, strong leadership skills and a vision to lead an inclusive and diverse research enterprise that will address pressing societal challenges. We are particularly looking for candidates who will thrive in the highly collegial and collaborative environment that Northwestern Engineering is known for.

  1. Mechanical Engineering Assistant/Assoc Prof – Manufacturing:  Apply here.

Areas of interest include: in-situ process metrology and data analytics of manufacturing processes such as additive manufacturing, hybrid manufacturing, and chip manufacturing; and manufacturing system optimization with applications to energy, communication, healthcare, or space. Outstanding applicants in other manufacturing areas that align with national manufacturing priorities will also be considered, particularly if the candidates have demonstrated interdisciplinary foci that will provide natural connections to Northwestern’s NIMSI manufacturing research center and the new NSF Engineering Research Center HAMMER (Hybrid Advanced Manufacturing: Moving from Evolution to Revolution).

  1. Mechanical Engineering Assistant/Assoc Prof – Broad Search:  Apply here.

Candidates are expected to strive for excellence in teaching and mentoring, as well as increasing diversity and inclusion in research and education. All research areas related to mechanical engineering will be considered. Alignment of candidates’ research expertise with strategic priorities of the department, i.e., mechanics for health and medicine, AI for manufacturing and design, energy and sustainability, and aerospace engineering will be preferable.

Application instructions: Candidates should upload a cover letter, curriculum vitae, statement of research, statement of teaching, statement of diversity, equality and inclusion, and the names and contact information for three to five references. Screening of applicants will begin on Nov. 15, 2022. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. Application materials should be submitted to the Search Committee Chair, exclusively via the web interface at the links indicated above.
