Associate Professor in Sustainable Design & Manufacturing, Aarhus University, Denmark

The Department of Engineering (ENG) at Aarhus University is looking for an innovative and visionary Associate Professor in the Section of Mechanical Engineering. Aarhus University is a top-100 university and has made ambitious strategic investments to place ENG in direct competition with the global engineering elite. Therefore, the department is focusing on advancing its research and teaching capabilities in the area of sustainable design & manufacturing.

The position is available from January 1, 2021 or as soon as possible hereafter.

Research Focus
Successful candidates are expected to develop a strong and visible research program and education program in sustainable design and manufacturing at an international level. Candidates are expected to have a strong background in parametric lifecycle inventory modeling of manufacturing processes, integrating environmental life cycle assessment and other sustainability assessment tools into design & manufacturing decision-making, and creating computer-aided tools for lifecycle design. Preference will be given to candidates with a demonstrated research experience in creating computer-aided decision-support tools for sustainable design & sustainable manufacturing.

We seek candidates who have an interdisciplinary reach in their research and are able to integrate sustainability, engineering design, and manufacturing research. Candidates should also strengthen the existing research area of Robotics, Machine Dynamics, and Manufacturing within the Section of Mechanical Engineering.

Candidates are expected to have a PhD or equivalent in mechanical engineering with prior employment at the Assistant Professor level.

To be successful in this role, we expect the candidates to fulfill the following requirements:

A strong research track record and high-quality articles in peer-reviewed journals and conferences within the field of mechanical engineering.

Ability to teach MSc. and BSc. courses in one or more areas of the following areas: sustainability, engineering design, manufacturing, computer-aided design.

Ability to compete for national and international research grants and to make important research contributions within the field of sustainable design & manufacturing. Demonstrated experience in obtaining external research grants from government and/or industry is desirable.

Ability to create and lead an internationally competitive research group in the area of sustainable product design and/or sustainable manufacturing. Leadership experience within relevant academic community is desirable.

Ability to develop long-term R&D cooperation with Danish industry and research organizations. Documented experience in establishing collaborations with Danish industry and with international research groups is a plus.

Documented communication skills in English and Danish is desirable.

The candidates are expected to demonstrate in the research portfolio how they envision contributing and strengthening current research activities in the Section of Mechanical Engineering and the Department of Engineering at Aarhus University.

The engineering field in Aarhus University is changing with a rapid growth in student population, major research initiatives as well as through the establishment of a number of new physical facilities in the city center of Aarhus. We have ambitious plans on increased activities in research, education as well as public and industrial cooperation. The Mechanical Engineering Section within the Department of Engineering has cooperation with universities and advisory service providers in more than 20 countries. The engineering field at Aarhus University is well established with extensive research activities, approximately 400 mechanical engineering students and a long tradition of industrial cooperation that we wish to extend significantly.

The candidate is required to teach relevant courses in the engineering educational program, and the candidate is encouraged to establish new, specialized courses within mentioned fields at the B.Sc. and/or M.Sc. levels of the Mechanical Engineering program.

The application must contain a complete CV including research activities, industrial R&D cooperation experience, a complete publication list as well as your leadership, teaching and fundraising experience. Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the assessment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. The selection is made on the basis of an assessment of who of the candidates are most relevant considering the requirements of the advertisement. All applicants will be notified within 6 weeks whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee and will receive his/her assessment. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants.

Formalities and salary range
Technical Sciences refers to the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Danish Universities under the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.

The application must be in English and include a curriculum vitae, degree certificate, a complete list of publications, a statement of future research plans and information about research activities, teaching portfolio and verified information on previous teaching experience (if any). Appointment shall be in accordance with the collective labour agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Salary depends on seniority as agreed between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Confederation of Professional Associations.
