Research Associate - Structural Mechanics for Reactor Applications 

Purpose

As a junior research staff member in the structural mechanics, the incumbent will work on the development of lifetime assessment methodology in the Materials Science and Technology Division (MSTD) in the Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

Major Duties / Responsibilities

- Conduct research on the development of lifetime assessment methodology for structural components in light water reactors and advanced high temperature reactors

- Work closely with expert team members in both supporting and leadership roles, as well as with subject matter experts

- Conduct research of materials behavior modeling, development of computational analysis tools, conducting structural mechanics analysis, and ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel (B&PV) Code rules development

- Conduct independent high-quality scientific research leading to publications in appropriate scientific journals

- Ensures compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements

- Maintains strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics

Qualifications Required

A PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, Materials Science, Materials Engineering or closely related field with a minimum of two years of significant experience in structural mechanics, materials behavior modeling of advanced structural materials for reactor applications, finite element technology, large-scale scientific computation, and ASME B&PV code rules, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience is required. The incumbent must possess expertise with finite element packages such as ABAQUS, WARP3D, or SIERRA, and/or pre- and post-processing tools ABAQUS/CAE, CUBIT, and PARAVIEW, and should be proficient in developing computational analysis tools using FORTRAN, C++, VBA, MATLAB, or Python to support development of lifetime assessment workflow tools. The incumbent must possess excellent interpersonal communication and writing skills necessary to interact with a diverse set of scientists, technical, and administrative staff as well as the ability to work both independently and in a high-performance team environment. A high level of innovation and creativity is expected.
