Dynamic Crack Branching

Hi all, 

     I came across the problem of dynamic crack branching in few papers like ["Phase field approximation of dynamic brittle fracture", Schlüter et al (2014), "Phase-field modeling of ductile fracture",Ambati et al (2015)].  I am not able to understand the reason for the crack to branch out at an angle ~27 when a tensile uniformly distributed load is applied in a dynamic way at top and bottom side. If you take isotropic homogenous elastic medium why the crack should branch out like that ? I would be grateful if you could please share your thoughts on this. 

Relation between plasticity and damage in studying the frictional behaviour between two composite laminates.

Hi all, 

     I want to model mode II composite delamination incorporating frictional effects. I found papers by Alfano and Sacco (2006) and few others also. My question is that to model such a situation are :

1) should I incorporate plasticity or damage analysis or both? What is the rite approach? 

2) In each of these cases, do I need to have a plastic yield function and damage surface ??  

How to prevent non-physical interpenetration of particles

Hi all, 

    I was trying to simulate the mode 2 delamination using End loaded split test using meshfree method (RKPM) by coding in MATLAB.  Traction separation law is implemented.

When upward load(displacement controlled)  is applied at the bottom portion of the bottom lamina, the bottom lamina is penetrating into the first lamina. At the surface where contact is happening, there is no traction transfer happening.

In ABAQUS, we can define a contact surface and interpenetration can be prevented, ensuring traction transfer.

Orthotropic plane strain & plane stress Constitutive matrix for micropolar elastic media

Hi all, 

     Could anyone please help me  finding the constitutive matrix for orthotropic plane strain and plane stress in cosserat elastic continua ?  I have done searches with micropolar orthotropic 2D , cosserat orthotropic 2D/ Plane strain etc. But couldnot get it. 

Also, what all changes one should make if I try extending the orthotropic elastic plane strain and plane stress constitutive relations for classical mechanics to the micropolar media?

   I want to learn about micropolar linear elastic theory.  Could anyone pls guide me which book/article/journal is best suited for a beginner in this area. I have quiet good background in basic solid mechanics, FEM and Dynamics.

Arc length method - Implementation Issues

Hi all,

     i am doing a material nonlinear problem.  I have used NR , which is giving good results till near 'limit point' and after that its giving peaks and troughs.  From the literature  I got to know that I should use arc length method (ALM) instead of NR for strain softening problems.  I am using MATLAB

1) Is there any existing code module for Arc length method which can be directly incorporated in my FE code?  In MATLAB central there is a code but its usable only when we have the analytical expressions.
