Your preferences in scientific/engineering/numerical programming
Submitted by Epyon on Fri, 2012-02-10 22:34.Hello everyone,
I am working on a project related to helping the everyday researcher do his/her programming easier and faster.
I have done a fair amount of research work at OSU and have gotten a feel for the way they program on a daily basis, but realize that it could be and probably is drastically different on different parts of the planet. As such, I am here to ask the following questions (really, any opinion helps, so feel free to respond with whatever you want):
1) What is/are your language(s) of preference? (e.g. MATLAB/Octave, Fortran, C, C++, Java, Python, etc.)
2) Do you use a certain programming style? (e.g. procedural, object-oriented, etc.)
3) What, if anything, is cumbersome with what you use now?

Profilometer software for NDT surface roughness inspection
Submitted by profilometer on Sat, 2012-02-04 01:31.Novacam 3D Profilometer Software
The Novacam three dimensional software programs are used with all Novacam Profliometers. The program permits the consumer to define how big the region, or line to be measured, along with the lateral resolution from the measurement.
Novacam's high end Data Acquisition Profilometer Software programs are incorporated with all of MicroCam non-contact profilometers.

Frictional rolling contact model CONTACT version 12.1 released
Submitted by Edwin Vollebregt on Fri, 2012-01-27 16:29.Dear all,
Herewith I want to announce the release of the frictional rolling contact model CONTACT version 12.1.
The main changes with respect to earlier versions of the program are as follows:
- Achieved a 100-fold speedup for solving larger normal contact problems.
- Improved the documentation of the viscoelastic part of CONTACT and
provided an example of its use. - Distinguished free and premium features in the software, the latter
requiring a valid license file.
For the full release-notes or more information on the program refer to the website www.kalkersoftware.org.
Regards, Edwin

how to calcualte total reaction force in a plane in ABAQUS
Submitted by duping812 on Fri, 2012-01-20 20:27.Dear all,
This is my first post in iMechanica forum.
I am trying to some simulation of cantilever beam bending in abaqus. Since the aspect ratio is pretty low (height/diameter~=2), I use 3D solid element instead of 2D beam element to construct the beam. I set the deflection at the free-end as the boundary condition, and try to solve the reaction force (perpendicular to the beam longitudinal axis). But I get in trouble to calculate the total reaction force at the free-end.
I know abaqus can do some operations on existing output data. I tried to sum the reaction forces of all nodes in the free-end plane, but the result did not agree with the Timoshenko beam equation.
If anyone can give some suggestions, that would be great.

Pressure increase for a thin walled vessel on Abaqus
Submitted by Ibrahim Emad El-din on Sun, 2011-12-04 20:45.I'm using Abaqus to model a Thin walled pressure vessel till Von Mises Stress (Svm) reaches the Ultimate Tensile Strength (UTS). Is there an easiers method to run the program in a way the pressure increases itself till Svm reaches to the UTS instead of running the program several times for differet pressures.

How to copy different parts in assembly in Abaqus CAE with merging boundary
Submitted by eng_arg on Wed, 2011-11-30 15:38.Hi,
I am trying to build a 2D composite model in Abaqus CAE which consists of a number of unit cell. I built a unit cell of the composite (by partitioning) with its own mesh and material properities as one part. I'd like to copy that a couple of times and apply the loads and BC and so on. I need to perform a parameter study and also do a monte-carlo simluation by changing some stuff inside the unit cell (for instance inclusion size) which I intend to do later by editing the python script which is produced by abaqus (*.rpy file). Therefore I need to mesh the unit cell as a part and copy that in the assembly to make an instance.

Smeared Cracking Model in ABAQUS
Submitted by brahmabul on Wed, 2011-11-30 10:40.I am trying to analyse a beam subject to elevated temperature using smeared cracking model for concrete. Its sequentially coupled thermal stress analysis. I am a newbie as far as ABAQUS is concerned. Can someone please help me out with the smeared cracking model. I am not able to figure the tension stiffening properties that I need to enter. Please help.

Report generation in Abaqus with Mode shapes
Submitted by KolluruK on Wed, 2011-11-09 17:20.Hi,
I am performing natural frequency analysis on a cylindrical structure in Abaqus. I am extracting about 80 modes (considering the presence of symmetrical modes). I want to generate a report with all the mode shape patterns and corresponding frequencies listed. Is there any way to do this automatically? Taking Prnt Scrn and generating word document is consuming lot of time and also I have multiple model combinations to do such analysis.
SIF,COD and Critical Flaw size for a pressured pipe with axial and circumferential crack in ABAQUS
Submitted by odilon on Tue, 2011-11-01 20:18.Hello All,
I'm new user in ABAQUS and I want to simulate and verify a critical crack-size in a pressurized pipe with axial and circumferential crack. Also, an important aspect, the crack is through-wall thickness. So, I'm faced with some doubts about its implementation in ABAQUS as following:
1 - Can I model the through-wall crack with shell ements based on line-spring (element LS3S)?
Abaqus - tank modelling
Submitted by matteo.tavano on Tue, 2011-11-01 08:45.Good morning,
I'm dealing with the model of a tank and I'm using the finite element software Abaqus. Unfortunately, I'm totally new to this program and so I have the following very trivial problem: I've to model a tank with two different thicknesses, 30mm in the bottom part and 15 mm in the top part. How can I do that?
I've to create the 2 different parts separately and then put them together in the assembly? In this case, how can I manage the interaction between the two parts?
Or there is another method (for example using the discrete field tool)? Which is the most efficient method?
Thanks in advance
Free FEM-pack development for everybody
Submitted by Roman_A_Pochinkov on Mon, 2011-10-31 20:20.
Dear All! If it will be interesting
for you please look at my FEM-pack FASTRAN. This software was developed for
dynamic analysis of the thin-walled shell-type structures and includes:
preprocessor (only for view early-developed FEM-models), processor (fast sparse
solver) and postprocessor (for view calculation results). Your opinion will be
very interesting for me.
