PhD position in the area of mechanical design of compliant robots
Submitted by alberto.parmiggiani on Thu, 2010-09-02 08:37.Department of Robotics Brain and Cognitive Sciences - RBCS (http://www.iit.it/en/rbcs/)
Italian Institute of Technology - IIT, Genoa
Application deadline: Sept. 24th 2010
Project Description:
Conventionally designed robots are made of metal parts, bearings, levers, gears or other components that are assembled with fasteners and screws, to obtain the desired functionality. An alternative approach is to derive this functionality directly from the properties of the materials and to embed components as, for example, with shape deposition manufacturing. CAD and FE simulations are essential tools to design and optimize the details of the robot's shape.

Career after the Ph.D.
Submitted by Alessio on Sat, 2010-01-30 12:37.Hi,
I'm an Engineer and a Ph.D. student in Applied Maths, working in the field of Nonlinear Finite Elements for Elasticity. I often think about my future career since, by now, I have a strong experience with coding FE in C++/Matlab/Mathematica, but no clue whatsoever about commercial black-box softwares for FEA. I'm worried about this, since most of the job vacancies from the industry (I'm not interested in pursuing the Academic career) seem to require only experience with a specific software and application, and not to directly code FE.

Recruiting PhD students to study Solid Mechanics at Harvard
Submitted by Zhigang Suo on Sun, 2007-10-21 20:11.Each year, several new students begin their studies of Solid Mechanics for PhD degrees at Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. The students come from all over the world. We have no constraint on where they come from.
Faculty members in Solid Mechanics. The School of Engineering and Applied Sciences is not divided into departments, but faculty do assemble into programs. Faculty members directly responsible for the program of Solid Mechanics are
