Packaging Mechanical Engineer at Hopewell Junction, NY, IBM Microelectronics Division
Submitted by Xiao Hu Liu on Thu, 2011-06-23 19:50.
Packaging mechanical engineers conduct simulation of electronic packages
to optimize package design for compatibility with assembly processes
and for reliable operation in end user systems such as servers, game
consoles and network switches. Simulation is conducted using commercial
finite element software such as ANSYS or ABAQUS to predict package
component stresses and strains. Simulations are verified by measurements
of warpage and stresses / strains in the packages using Digital image
contrast, strain gages, capacitance meters, etc. Package material
properties such as coefficient of thermal expansion, Poisson ratio and
modulus that are required for simulation are measured using specialized
mechanical equipment. Thus, familiarity with numerical simulation

Career after the Ph.D.
Submitted by Alessio on Sat, 2010-01-30 12:37.Hi,
I'm an Engineer and a Ph.D. student in Applied Maths, working in the field of Nonlinear Finite Elements for Elasticity. I often think about my future career since, by now, I have a strong experience with coding FE in C++/Matlab/Mathematica, but no clue whatsoever about commercial black-box softwares for FEA. I'm worried about this, since most of the job vacancies from the industry (I'm not interested in pursuing the Academic career) seem to require only experience with a specific software and application, and not to directly code FE.

Seeking US citizen MS/PhD applicants with computational mechanics background
Submitted by Jeffrey L Cipolla on Wed, 2008-10-08 15:31.Hello - trying AGAIN to get this to post. I'm seeking applicants with computational mechanics background for new work in security applications. Areas include blast, failure, acoustics, and related fields. Security requirements dictate that we must have US citizens for this work - sorry, I know that's restrictive. Please feel free to email me at cipolla@wai.com for inquiries and details.
