The remarkable mechanical properties of crumpled materials

Mechanics of crumpled materials

Crumpled materials exhibit unusual and as yet unexpained mechanical properties. Through the surprisingly complex morphologies of facets and ridges formed in the crumpling of paper into a ball or densser materials, very high strength to weight ratios can emerge.

A paper on fracture resistance enhancement of layered structures by multiple cracks

We have just published a new paper that presents a theoretical model to test if the fracture resistance of a layered structure can be increased by introducing weak layers changing the cracking mechanism. An analytical model, based on the J integral, predicts a linear dependency between the number of cracks and the steady state fracture resistance. A finite element cohesive zone model, containing two cracking planes for simplicity, is used to check the theoretical model and its predictions.

Looking for a VUMAT programmer to share publication with

Dear researchers,

I’m Joseba Mendiguren, researcher at the Advanced Manufacturing Group of Mondragon Unibertsitatea. I’m currently working on advanced yielding/hardening models for metals.
I’m in the middle of a paper writing work but I cannot find time to sit down and program the VMAT that I need to run some simulations for the paper. I’m looking for a VUMAT programmer researcher willing to work on the topic and share the publication authorship on return.

Two PhD positions in computational and experimental multiscale mechanics of materials – Eindhoven, Netherlands

Our Mechanics of Materials Group at Eindhoven University of Technology, Netherlands, in association with Materials innovation institute M2i, has two openings for talented PhD students in the field of multiscale mechanics of materials. They are part of a project on multiscale hygro-mechanics of paper. The industrial background of the project is in inkjet-printing. One opening is on experimental characterisation and the other on multiscale computational modelling.
For exceptionally suited young doctors we may consider changing the positions into PostDoc positions.
