AFM in Nano-Biomechanics (October Journal Club Topic)
Submitted by Majid Minary on Fri, 2011-09-30 17:37.Introduction:
The October 2011 journal club theme is "AFM in Nano-biomechanics". Nano-biomechanics is an emerging field that aims at exploring fundamental science and engineering related to biological materials at the nanoscale (http://www.technologyreview.com/biomedicine/16475/ and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nanobiomechanics). Atomic force microscope (AFM) has been one of the instrumental tools in this field by providing pN force sensitivity, and better than nanometer spatial resolution.

Internal strain energy and resonant/natural frequency: inversely correlated?
Submitted by sinornis on Wed, 2012-02-08 04:31.Hello all,
I must apologise in advance if this is a silly question—I'm a biologist, not an engineer. I am using FEA for a zoological biomechanics project to model structural performance of certain skeletal elements, and I have observed that, in one particularly spring-like bone, internal strain energy is tightly inversely correlated with resonant/natural frequency (free-free analysis in Abaqus). Is this relationship obvious to an engineer? In particular, is this relationship predicted by the equations describing springs or such things as tuning forks (formula given on this Wikipedia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tuning_fork)?

Postdoctoral Research Associate at Brown University: Finite Element Simulations of Active Biopolymer Networks
Submitted by Dibakar Datta on Thu, 2012-01-26 15:52.
A postdoctoral position with
primary focus on finite element simulations of active biopolymer
networks is available immediately at Shenoy Research Group @ Brown University . We are looking for a strongly
motivated candidate to work on the mechanics of active cytoskeletal
networks. The ideal candidate will have a background in solid
mechanics/computational physics with expertise in finite element simulations. Experience with Monte Carlo methods and stochastic simulations is desired but not essential. This
individual will have the opportunity to be directly involved in

Journal Club Theme of January 2012: Mechanics of Growth
Submitted by lncool on Sun, 2012-01-01 16:23."I can't understand how people are still working on growth. That stuff's all done." This was the beginning of the first lunch conversation at a recent Banff workshop on Mathematical Foundations on Mechanical Biology... somewhat frustrating for someone who is excited about growth. Fortunately, most of the presentations and discussions still focused on growth. Although "that stuff's all done".
Would anybody claim that plasticity was all done when Richard von Mises published his milestone work in 1913? Or was it all done when Geoffrey Ingram Taylor contributed his famous monograph on crystal plasticity in 1938? Or was it all done when Ekkehard Kröner introduced the concept of dislocations to explain the mechanistic origin of plastic slip in 1958? Or was it only all done when Juan Simo made it computationally manageable in 1985?
In a way, growth is like plasticity. It has its von Mises in Julius Wolff and D'Arcy Thompson, its Kröners in Steven Cowin and Dennis Carter, and its Simos in Rik Huiskes, Anne Hoger, Larry Taber, and Jay Humphrey. But... does that mean that "that stuff's all done"?
