porous material
Journal Club Theme of December 2011: Mechanics of Porous Materials
Submitted by john.balk on Tue, 2011-12-06 16:24.Porous materials can be created by a variety of methods and exhibit properties that are advantageous in certain applications, e.g. insulation, energy absorption, and core materials in sandwich panels. As the length scale of the pores/ligaments is reduced below one micron, size effects arise and cause changes in the deformation mechanisms that operate in the ligament material. The mechanical properties can change dramatically, especially for so-called “nanoporous metals”, which have pores and ligaments as small as a few nanometers.

Which program? ABAQUS, Comsol or Ansys
Submitted by Giacomo on Thu, 2010-04-29 11:10.Hi all,
I am a PhD student at the first months. I have to choose a finite element software to study impact effect on biological soft tissues. After some web researches the softwares which seem to be more suitable are ABAQUS, Comsol Multiphisics and Ansys.
My intention is to develop an user defined material model considering the material as anisotropic porous-visco-elastic.
I would appreciate some suggestions/opinion. I am specially interested in dynamical simulations.

Mechanics of porous material
Submitted by Hao Meng on Wed, 2010-02-24 07:01.Hi all,
I am going simulate a plate of porous material (SiC) to evaluate its strengh.
Would someone share some knowledge on the mechanics of the porous materials.
Thanks.
/Hao

a fracture problem
Submitted by Jin MZ on Wed, 2009-09-02 14:11.Dear everyone
If we considerer a 3D fracture stress and strain field as a combination of numerous 2D fields in thickness direction, the J integral at each 2D plane can be obtained according to Rice’s definition (Abaqus and Ansys also include this function). What I concerned is the ratio of J integral at the surface of SEB or CT specimen to that at the mid-plane of the specimen. What factors have influence on the ratio? How to find the quantitive relationship between the factors and the ratio in linear elastic model?

cellular/ porous material simulation software
Submitted by mvex on Mon, 2008-01-07 01:27.hi - i'm new to the site and not familiar with material science in particular, however i'm currently looking for some simulation-software for cellular solids/ porous materials/ foam which allows me to evaluate the differentiation of geometry without too much scripting/programming - could anyone please point me in the direction of software available at a reasonable price (as an academic/student licence)/shareware/freeware which has output formats such as STL (Stereolithography), OBJ, DXF, IGES ..
Many Thanks!
