I laughed.  Certainly there is an element of truth to this. 

Such schemes are not sustainable. Fortunately, in my experience, the best faculty do not operate like this.  They are mostly excited to see their students develop their own lives as researchers.  Invariably, this leads them to work in fields that are quite different from where they started.
