The key to developing materials against failure under extreme environments is the understanding of the interplay between the various physical scales present, from the atomic level interactions, to the microstructural composition and the macroscale behavior. The ability to do this requires new methods that can be used to predict macroscale properties accurately based on microstructures and nanostructures without resorting to empiricism.


a strange question about the Euler beam buckling?

I have a beam whose two ends are roller condition which means one end is zero moment and zero displacement and the other end is zero moment but can have the displacement only along the beam axis. Then the compression force is applied on this end along the beam axis.


regarding orthognal machining chip propagation usng abaqus

hi am doing my project on high speed machining of aluminium and steel. for chip propagation i want some procedure how to do crack/fracture analysis using ABAQUS. if anybody knew about this please send me information regarding steps involved in building crack propagation.if any practile examples or tutorials are available for this send me to my mail id. my mail id is sasivamsi@gmail.com. am using ABAQUS V6.6.

Euler's buckling formula

Hi, everyone,

I am new here. Now I am doing a research which is related to the Euler's buckling formula.  It is known that when the cylinder is thick enough, Euler's buckling formula is no longer valid. I want to know in which region of slenderness(aspect ratio) of a cylinder or column that the Euler's buckling formula is valid. Is there any analytical study or numerical results about it? Is there any suggestion or paper I can find?

A Discrete Cohesive Model for Fractal Cracks

The fractal crack model described here incorporates the essential
features of the fractal view of fracture, the basic concepts of
the LEFM model, the concepts contained within the
Barenblatt-Dugdale cohesive crack model and the quantized
(discrete or finite) fracture mechanics assumptions. The
well-known entities such as the stress intensity factor and the
Barenblatt cohesion modulus, which is a measure of material
toughness, have been re-defined to accommodate the fractal view of
fracture.

Three positions in hypervelocity multiphase flows

    Three assistant researcher/research scientist/postdoctoral positions are available in large 3-year duration, Department of Defense program on “Release and Atmospheric Dispersal of Liquid agents”.  The effort is aiming to the basic understanding of physics of aero-breakup and disperse of liquid agents under hypervelocity incident flows.

Help in Modeling Redefine Material Properties in ABAQUS

Hi everyone,

I am using ABAQUS to simulate the soil earth pressure around a buried concrete pipe. Based on reading different threads posted. I knew that there are two ways to simulate the process of excavation and the pipe placement and backfilling.

The first method is to use the ELEMENT COPY command where you duplicate two sets of the elements where the first is assigned the original soil propeties and the copied sets will be assigned the backfilling material properties and the concrete pipe properties. After the MODEL CHANGE command will be used to deactivate and activate elements based on the construction sequence.... This method works for my problem.

A toast for John Hutchinson

Presented at the reception in honor of Professor John W. Hutchinson.  I should explain the context of my remarks. In 1995, Bob McMeeking, having exhausted himself in the endeavor of forming a useful intellect from so little to work with, appealed to a higher power and sent me to Cambridge. The week of my arrival, Prof. Hutchinson surveyed the challenge before him, and responded with the temperate and sage wisdom we have all come to admire: he packed his bags and moved to Denmark....For a whole year.... This action inspired many in mechanics. McMeeking left the country the same year (apparently to recuperate from our time together). Evans apparently entered into negotiations withe the rest of the Ivy League. And John Bassani, unwittingly left holding the bag while on sabbatical at Harvard, enforced a strict policy of my only talking to him on the way to weekly basketball games.

VUMAT and ALE in ABAQUS

Hi all,

     Here I encoutered a error in ABAQUS when I include ALE with VUMAT. When ALE was not included with VUMAT, my job can work well while with the combination of VUMAT and ALE, the job cann't work any more due to a "Signal 8" error. And if I use a built-in material model and at the same time ALE, a job can work. Furthermore, element failure is considered in all of the cases.

    Anyone can give some suggetion? Thanks in advance!

Thermonuclear energy by shock waves

The reasons of the failure of initiative the thermonuclear reaction by shock waves

      1.The failure.

The first thermonuclear reaction had realized a half century ago - in the hidrogeneous bomb. It had initiated just by the explosive wave becous of explosion the "atomic fuse" from deviding material. For industrial using of this scheme the power of explosion must diminish in a million times; the "atomic fuse" was not suitable for it. It was needed to search the way to form a system of the shock waves securing on a smoll thermonuclear charge the temperatures the same in a bomb.

Micromechanical observation of the kinetics of biomolecular interactions in liquid

We have recently suggested the potential of resonant microcantilever for quantitative study on the kinetics of biomolecular interactions such as protein-protein interaction and DNA hybridization. We have employed the Langmuir kinetic model for describing the molecular interactions on the surface, which leads to change of overall mass of cantilever responsible for resonant frequency shift. Such Langmuir kinetic model dictates the in situ resonant frequency shift due to biomolecular interaction in liquid. This indicates that resonant cantilever is able to provide the information of biochemical reaction. This work was published in Applied Physics Letters in Oct 31, 2008.

Two-year Postdoctoral Position in Stochastic Electromagnetics

In many aspects of computational simulation there is an element of uncertainty or randomness in problem parameters. This two-year postdoctoral position aims to consider uncertainties for electromagnetism problems. More specifically, a stochastic finite element type of approach would be developed in conjunction with computational electromagnetics. The methodology might involve formulation and solution of stochastic partial differential equations, random eigenvalue problems, random algebraic equation, and random matrices.
