Journal Club Theme of Aug. 1 2008: Regulation and stabilization of cell adhesion by external forces
Submitted by Muhammad H Zaman on Fri, 2008-08-01 03:56.
Cell adhesion plays a fundamental role in a variety of physiological processes, ranging from differentiation of stem cells to regulating metastasis. While studies on cell adhesion originated decades ago, it has been only recently that researchers have begun to understand the role of external forces and stresses in stabilizing cell adhesion at a single molecule and bulk level.

Post-Doctoral Position in Theoretical and Computational Mechanics
Submitted by Miles B Rubin on Thu, 2008-08-07 10:23.A Cosserat Point Element (CPE) for finite deformation elastic-viscoplastic materials
Background: Recently the theory of a Cosserat Point has been used to develop an eight noded 3-D brick Cosserat Point Element (CPE) for finite deformation elasticity. In contrast with standard finite element procedures, the CPE approach treats the element as a structure and proposes a strain energy function that ensures positive stiffness to all inhomogeneous modes of deformation. This leads to a CPE that does not experience hourglass instabilities exhibited by elements in commercial codes.

can any one suggest me a tensile testing machine for small specimens/films witha temperature ramp facility
Submitted by Bhabani K. Satapathy on Thu, 2008-08-07 06:21.I intend to do some tensile testing on some composite materials with very small thickness (about 0.5-1mm) and size 3 cm x 1 cm in a temperature ramp mode. I would like to know the name of such a testing machine or contact if any one has the same?

Defining Tensile/Compression Strength for Plastics in ABAQUS
Submitted by mizzjoey on Wed, 2008-08-06 04:05.Hi.
This is a simple question about defining material properties of a plastic I guess.
I have a value for tensile & compression strength and have to include this in my model, alongside the modulus & poisson ratio. I use *Elastic for modulus & poisson, but I don't know which card to use for tensile & compression.
Have already checked the manual, but the search 'tensile compression strength' leads me to the Hashin criteria page, which is not suitable for my material.
Can anyone help?
Thanks in advance,
jo

DigiMAT: new software for composite material modeling
Submitted by Ali R. khalighi on Mon, 2008-08-04 14:15.I'm working on modeling of mechanical properties of polymer based nanocomposites with clay.I have prepared a code for distributing plat like particles in polimar matrix (preparing RVE) with ABAQUS. I saw DIGIMAT software by www.e-xstream.com Company in internet some times ago. Now I want to test accuracy and application of this software one my project. I want to know if anyone in this club has had worked with this software and so if any one can provide me with a link of academic version of this software for a while.

Abaqus cylindrical
Submitted by M Jawad Qarni on Sat, 2008-08-02 09:39.I am currently simulation arc welding process. i have performed plate butt welding using abaqus software. Dflux subroutine was used and the heat source model i used is goldak double ellipsoidal model.
Now i want to apply this technique to the welding of pipes, but currently i am having difficulty with the nodal coordinates. I have defined my glodal CS to cylindrical coordinate system in part and assembly defintion. But after generating the mesh the input file contain nodal coordinates in cartesian coordinates.
My question is what is to be done to get the nodal coordinate in cylindarical form (R, theta, Z) or is there any transformation command in abaqus that i can apply.

How to extract Forces and Moment from Solid Tet Mesh Model?
Submitted by tarun on Sat, 2008-08-02 02:53.I have one solid Y-strucutre model which i have modelled as assuming beam model in NASTRAN. From NASTRAN i am extracting internal loads (Nodal forces and Nodal Moments) successfully and then i am doing the strength analysis of perticule section by using internal loads. Now i have model the same structure using 3D solid finite element model by assuming Tet Mesh under ABAQUS. Analysis was running perfectly in ABAQUS. Now my problem is how to extract the internal loads from the 3D solid Tet mesh model for the same section. I need help to extract the internal loads from the solid Tet mesh. Please help me i am right now stuck at this point.

Solving Reynolds equation (EHL problem)
Submitted by M. Scaraggi on Fri, 2008-08-01 14:11.I'm working on the numerical solution of the mixed problem in lubricated contacts. Does anyone know if the lubricant equation (Reynolds one) was never solved for film thickness instead of pressure (like actually is done with MGMI techniques) in some pubblication?

Effects of elastic anisotropy on the surface stability of thin film/substrate system
Submitted by Ying Li on Fri, 2008-08-01 04:29.The surface stability of thin film/substrate system is an important problem both in the film synthesis and reliability of micro electrical and mechanical system (MEMS). In this work, the elastic anisotropy effect on surface stability of thin film/substrate system was considered. The theoretical analysis indicates that elastic anisotropic influence could play an important role in the surface stability of thin film/substrate system.

Gating Mechanisms of Mechanosensitive Channels of Large Conductance
Submitted by Yuye Tang on Fri, 2008-08-01 01:40.We present a top-down hierarchical computational framework for mechanobiology problems, the molecular dynamics decorated finite element method (MDeFEM). The MscL in Escherichia coli was given as an example with its continuum model built under the instruction of MDeFEM framework. Its gating pathways under various external perturbations were investigated, which are in good agreement with current experimental data and all-atom simulation results. The MDeFEM method showed its advantages and great potential in solving the mechanical responses of large biomolecules with complex geometries, which often involves multiple temporal and spatial scales.
