Large deformation and electrochemistry of polyelectrolyte gels

Immersed in an ionic solution, a network of polyelectrolyte polymers imbibes the solution and swells, resulting in a polyelectrolyte gel. The swelling is reversible, and is regulated by ionic concentrations, mechanical forces, and electric potentials. This paper develops a field theory to couple large deformation and electrochemistry. A specific material model is described, including the effects of stretching the network, mixing the polymers with the solvent and ions, and polarizing the gel. We show that the notion of osmotic pressure in a gel has no experimental significance in general, but acquires a physical interpretation within the specific material model.

Characterising fracture toughness in epoxy using mechanical fatigue. Help!

Hi all,

I have taken up this research project/attachment on
"characterising the fracture toughness of epoxy using mechanical
fatigue", and encountered lot's of problems while researching. I'm just
a student, not even in university, but rather still schooling (grade
10), so am completely new to this field, which explains my problem in
understanding all the lit reviews, lecture slides i found online.
Luckily, i found out this site, and would hope that someone can guide
me in the right direction!

EMI 2010 Engineering Mechanics Conference at USC, Los Angeles California, August 8-11, 2010

EMI, the Engineering Mechanics Institute of ASCE, will hold its annual conference on August 8-11, 2010 at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, CA.   Dr. Roger Ghanem (Department of Aerospace & Mechanical Engineering) and Dr. Amy Rechenmacher (Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering) will be the Co-chairs of the EMI 2010 Conference.

I need a help in the following topic.

I am doing a modal analysis of a 3 D frame. The expected fundamental natural frequency was above 1000Hz.I selected Block Lanczos method as analysis option. The start frequency and end frequency in the appeared window was not given. The fundamental frequency I obtained was very less(about 40Hz) than the expected value.Later,I changed the start frequency and end frequency to 1000Hz and 25000Hz respectively. Then,I got the result as 1018Hz.I want to know whether we should give the start frequency and end frequency? From my experience,I got the idea that if we are not giving those two values, the result obtained will be wrong. Please give me a solution

FLAC vs. ABAQUS vs COMSOL

Hi,

I am trying to learn a software for geomechanics modelling. I used to run my own codes. Can anyone tell me which one is better for geomechanical modelling between FLAC and ABAQUS?

Recently, I notice that many people are learning COMSOL, which is a multiphysics modelling software. How about its mechanical capability?

 Thanks in Advance.

Dynamic Modeling for Viscoelastic material using ANSYS

Hello,

I am planing to model a viscolestic material in ANSYS and condition is dynamic.

Could anyone please suggest what are the essential things (i mean datas) required for modeling a viscoelastic material?

For example, If I do the DMA test of viscoelastic materials i can have the modulus data at different frequencies. How to use those data in ANSYS to find out the stress-strain curve?

Thnaks for your kind help

cohesive element definition in ABAQUS

Hi there,

I am sure a lot of you have been using ABAQUS to define cohesive elements. I have seen a lot of forums here and a lot of them specified the Alfano 2001 paper as a great reference. Here is the title of the paper incase anyone is wondering which paper:

G. Alfano and M.A. Crisfield, Finite element interface models for the delamination analysis of laminated composites: mechanical and computational issues, International Journal for Numerical Methods in Engineering 50 (2001), pp. 1701–1736.

ABAQUS itself uses this paper to describe its usage of cohesive elements.

"Novel discretization techniques for moving discontinuities and
singularities". You can download some explanatory text on the topics
and methods in the file uploaded to the "files" part of this group. We
invite you to submit a paper as part of this symposium. Strong
contributions will make this session a success and we are grateful in
advance for your participation.

Principle of virtual work

(1) Principle of virtual work statement can be said as:

"Virtual work = Work done by real forces in moving through virtual displacements
= (Real Force) * virtual displacement

Therefore, the equation of virtual work that you get is:
F * du = (K*u) * du (where, du is the virtual displacement and u is real displacement, and Ku is the real internal force and F is the real external force)

(2) However, I was going through the lecture notes of Duke university, we have at the following URL:

Remeshing when using Abaqus

Hi

I am modelling a contact problem using Abaqus and I am trying to use remeshing hoping to get more accurate results in critical locations. But I encounter following error:" the area of 7 elements is zero, small or negative". Despite of the definitions of the remeshing rules always the error message appears when size of elements  is quite a small. My goal is to get minimum element size 1E-7m in critical location. The error message appears much before that goal. I am very grateful if someone could help.

dynamic crack propagation

Hello everyone, I am useing the CZM method researching the dynamic crack propation problem in composites,so I must have the UEL OR VUEL of cohesive zone elements in ABAQUS or other FEM software,at this moment,  i have a UEL of ABAQUS,so i have a question ,if i want to simulate the dynamic crack problem, can i use the UEL? Or must write my VUEL?

Everyone answer is welcome

If some people have the same researching plan ,we can communicate each other!

For metals, when will the elastic modulus be changed?

I have a question, for the same metal material, when will the elastic modulus will be changed? in another words, in what kind of processing or machine condition will the elastic modulus be changed? for example, to machine elements(gear, bearing ...), when the part surface is case hardened, will the elastic modulus be changed? if not, how can the difference of hardness between case hardened surface and without hardened substrate be reflected in FEM analysis? how can the case hardened surface parameters affect the contact stress when two part are brought to contact?

and a further question about this topic is will Carburizing and nitriding treatment change the elastic modulus of metals?

Thank you, for you help very much!
