Two PhD student positions at The University of Sydney, Australia

Two PhD student positions at Particles and Grains Laboratory, The University of Sydney, Australia

The research project is concerning the micromechanics of granular materials, which include time-dependent deformation of geo-materials, thermal-mechanical behaviour at elevated temperatures, and transport phenomena in porous media. In this project, the main objectives are to characterise and understand fundamental deformation mechanisms from the grain level, and develop material models with grain-scale information with multi-scale approaches using simulations and experiments.

There will be two openings for PhD students in this project:

1. The first position will focus on the grain-scale experiments. The Ph.D. candidate is expected to have a strong background in materials characterisation, mechanical testing and data analysis with a demonstrated ability to work independently. Furthermore the candidate should be willing in developing creative cross-disciplinary experimental procedures and be skilled in the formulation of numerical models.

2. The second PhD position will focus on modelling aspects of the project. The candidate is expected to have a strong background in material modelling, multi-scale simulations (using finite element method and/or discrete element method). The candidate should demonstrate ability to develop computational methods.

The Ph.D. Candidate will engage in this research project under the supervision of Dr. Dorian Hanaor and Dr. Yixiang Gan as a postgraduate member of the Particles and Grains Laboratory (PGL) in the School of Civil Engineering, The University of Sydney, Australia.

Scholarship programs are available for suitable candidates. Applicants must hold an MSc degree or equivalent. Applications should include a Cover Letter, an Expression of Interest in this project, Curriculum Vitae, Transcripts and contact details of referees. The application packages can be sent to Dr. Dorian Hanaor (dorian.hanaor@sydney.edu.au) and Dr. Yixiang Gan (yixiang.gan@sydney.edu.au).
