The Global Enterprise for Micro Mechanics and Molecular Medicine (GEM4, www.gem4.org) and the Research Centre of Excellence (RCE) in Mechanobiology will be organizing a Summer School on Cellular and Molecular Mechanics with a focus on Mechanobiology. The 2010 GEM4 Summer School will be held from July 25 - 31, 2010 at the National University of Singapore. This 2010 Summer School will comprise both lectures and lab demonstrations. This summer school will be held one week before the World Congress on Biomechanics (WCB) 2010. This conference will also held in Singapore from August 1 – 6, 2010. The intended audience of this GEM4 Summer School includes graduate students, post docs, and faculty members from engineering, physical sciences, and biological sciences who are interested to learn basic knowledge and state-of-the-art research in the interdisciplinary area between engineering and biology. The objectives are to educate participants in the fundamentals of cell and molecular biomechanics and its applications in biology and medicine, provide an intense learning experience, and facilitate interactions among engineers, physicists, biologists and clinicians. We hope to acquaint participants with basic concepts of biomechanics and biology and to apply biomechanical approaches to biological and clinical problems. The approach of the summer school is to first emphasize basic concepts and then proceed to problem-based learning in cell and molecular biomechanics. Laboratory demonstrations and exposure to local research facilities will be provided in addition to introductory and advanced tutorials.
