Solid Mechancis/Material Physics Faculty Position at University of Colorado at Boulder

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Colorado at Boulder invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position at the rank of assistant professor with expertise in solid mechanics/materials physics; exceptionally well-qualified candidates with outstanding credentials may be considered for appointment at a higher academic level. Candidates are expected to complement and strengthen existing departmental research in the areas of micro-/nano-systems engineering, energy and environmental engineering, materials, or biomechanical/biomaterials engineering.  Candidates must have an earned doctorate in mechanical engineering or a closely related field with a strong background in research. Successful candidates must have a strong commitment to scholarship, the development of an externally funded research program, and teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels in mechanical engineering.  Post-doctoral or similar professional experience is highly desirable but not required.

IMECE 2010 Student Travel Awards and Best Papers Contest

The AMD executive committee (EC) just announced the student travel awards and best paper contest for IMECE 2010. Between 10 and 15 students will be selected for travel grants of $750 each. The students who receive travel awards will also become eligible to participate in the best paper contest. This is a great opportunity for young students to present their work and meet other researchers during IMECE 2010.

Call for papers: Symposium on Mechanics of Soft Materials in ASME IMECE 2010

Dear friends and colleagues,

We invite you to submit an abstract to Symposium on Mechanics of Soft Materials. This symposium is part of 2010 ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress & Exposition, November 12-18, 2010 Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. This symposium is sponsored by the newly formed Mechanics of Soft Materials technical committee in Applied Mechanics Division of ASME.

Light Activated Polymers

Soft active materials have received increasing interests recently. Here, soft materials can broadly refer to polymers, elastomers, hydrogel gels. Active materials mean that these materials can respond to external stimuli. Examples of soft active materials include shape memory polymers, environmentally responsive hydrogels, liquid crystal elastomers, etc.

Journal Club Theme of July 2007: Mechanics of Hydrogels

Before we start this issue of J-club, I would like to recommend Prof. Langer's lecture for his MRS Von Hippel Award in the 2005 MRS Fall Meeting (Langer, 2006). His lecture not only delineated the history of the new exciting field of drug delivery and controlled release, but also told us many interesting stories happened in his career development. With Prof. Langer's pioneer work, many new materials are developed for designing new drug delivery and controlled drug release systems.

We are soliciting papers involving constitutive, time (rate)-dependent behavior of all materials. The time-dependent mechanical response should be non-negligible in cases involving non-mechanical fields. Papers dealing with modeling and experimental aspects of the subject area are sought. Possible topics include, but are not limited to: characterization and modeling of behavior at multiple scales; viscoelasticity, viscoplasticity; transport, chemically and electronically active processes; multiphase and biomaterial systems; thermodynamics; shape memory; mechanics of testing; micro/nanoindentation on time-dependent materials; dynamic rate-dependent behaviors; large deformations; residual stresses; time (rate)-dependent damage and failure; time (rate)-dependent polycrystalline, single crystal and nanocrystalline behaviors; multifunctional materials; mechanics of processing; design methods; environmental interactions; experimental methods and techniques; linear and non-linear time-dependent behavior; time (rate)-dependent composite materials of all types; numerical analysis; physical aging; rheological properties; temperature, pressure, and moisture effects on time dependence; damping; related topics. A short/tentative abstract indicating your intent to attend must be submitted by March 20, 2007, to the conference website: http://www.ae.utexas.edu/MTDM08/
