Post-doctoral positions at UCSB in mechanics
Submitted by mrb3h on Wed, 2010-07-21 22:28.The Materials Department and the Department of Mechanical Engineering at UCSB invites applications for post-doctoral fellowships in computational mechanics, with an emphasis on (1) micromechanics of layered systems and (2) high temperature composites. The position involves significant collaboration with a wide variety of colleagues working on many aspects of structural materials, including those in industry and other academic institutions. Preference will be given to applicants with a strong track record of publication. Pending the availability of funding, we anticipate filling two positions as quickly as possible: applications will be reviewed until August 30th, 2010.
A toast for John Hutchinson
Submitted by mrb3h on Sat, 2008-11-29 13:44.Presented at the reception in honor of Professor John W. Hutchinson. I should explain the context of my remarks. In 1995, Bob McMeeking, having exhausted himself in the endeavor of forming a useful intellect from so little to work with, appealed to a higher power and sent me to Cambridge. The week of my arrival, Prof. Hutchinson surveyed the challenge before him, and responded with the temperate and sage wisdom we have all come to admire: he packed his bags and moved to Denmark....For a whole year.... This action inspired many in mechanics. McMeeking left the country the same year (apparently to recuperate from our time together). Evans apparently entered into negotiations withe the rest of the Ivy League. And John Bassani, unwittingly left holding the bag while on sabbatical at Harvard, enforced a strict policy of my only talking to him on the way to weekly basketball games.
